The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-Chan is a comic spin-off from the main Haruhi Suzumiya series. It seems to suggest that when, in the fourth volume of that series, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, the alternate timeline was created, that it continue even after the "main" universe was restored. To that end, the main characters are Yuki, Ryoko and Kyon, though really Yuki and Ryoko have the main stage. Oh, Kyon still has a big role as Yuki's potential love interest, but Ryoko, as Yuki's best friend and big sister/mother figure, has a bigger role. It should be noted that, just as when the alternate timeline was first introduced in the fourth Haruhi book, that Yuki and Ryoko are not ordinary human girls. Yuki is shy but not emotionless, and Ryoko has a temper but is sweet and not a psycho. Kyon is not developed much as we don't get much of his perspective, except for one or two spots. As the story progresses, we learn that the Literature Club, which Yuki is the only current member and president of, is about to be disbanded for not meeting the "at least five members" requirement. In her search for new members, Yuki runs into and recruits Kyon, whom she has been crushing on due to a small act of kindness he did for the shy girl. Ryoko keeps trying to push the two of them together, despite how much the unbearably shy girl is irked by it, though Yuki does appreciate the efforts of her friend. Haruhi shows up as well for her usual antics, in a hint of what will be more antics. Here she is different due to the changes that spawned this other timeline. I don't know if the other timeline is official, or if it is just a "what-if" scenario asking what would have happened had Kyon not changed things back to the way they were. I like to think that it really did spawn a separate universe. I really liked Nagato here. I think she's cool anywhere, but to see her mannerisms and interests ramped up to a higher level, combined with her shy demeanor, was sweet. As for Ryoko, I like her, but keep thinking of her evil and psycho main timeline self. Kyon is nice, but hasn't gotten much development. I hope eventually they do something with him. As for Haruhi, well, she is still Haruhi, if a nicer version created by the main Nagato. The art was actually really nice and better than the first few volumes I've read so far of the main timeline Haruhi series. I quite liked it. Really, really fun series and one I highly Recommend.

While I do like the series as a whole, I hold volume 1 in a special place in my heart. Since I've mostly been reading it online, though, I've now been wanting to actually buy a copy of my own, since it's now licensed in the U.S. Perhaps when November rolls by, that'd be the right timing for this feel-good, humorous book. And now, to end this review with a more recent drawing of Nagato that clearly looks nothing like the ones above:
Why, you may ask? Because I remember being excited when I learned of its existence, and quickly tried to find it online to read for free. Also, because the story first takes place in the wintertime -- the good ol' holidays, where you really appreciate the friends and family you love.
And, I'll admit, I remember hating Ryoko Asakura at first, with the way she treated Yuki Nagato, like hitting her head to wake her up, and teasing her by playing around with her crush, Kyon. I thought she was being a bad/fake friend to Nagato, but by the end of chapter 2, it was clear to me that she really cared for her. That was a really sweet moment.
I also loved Tsuruya & Mikuru Asahina's introductions, along with their gym teacher. It was just the first chapter, and yet, the art already amazed me there!
But my most favorite moment is when Nagato decides to go out to buy some bread from the store and .
Yuki Nagato is so adorable. I can relate to her, because we're both shy, quiet, awkward, and even wear glasses. I think I might even have a girl-crush on her.
Look! I enjoyed the volume so much, I even made some fan art of it! (Be warned, though, it's very old - circa 2011 or 2012 - so that also means it's very crappy!)

It has its wholesome moments, but it’s a bit boring for me...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Loved it, much less confusing than the melancholy of Haruchi-chan, can't wait to read more abou Yuki-chan and the literature club.

I was already aware of this existence and overall concept of this series from the Anime adaptation however unfortunately I have to give a low rating for it's first volume simple because of missed opportunities and poor characterization that is established within this first volume which would end up dictating the future of this series. So yeah unfortunately volume 1 is gonna catch most of the heat from me. The Haruhi Suzumiya franchise is really important for me. I literally rewatch the original show and movie every December season so I know these characters inside out. Now the concept of a spin off series about the Nagato world from Disappearance where all our characters are just normal people in a high school setting initially had me confused. The entire point of the original Haruhi Suzumiya series is that it's presented as a typical slice of life tropey anime with cute girls on all the front covers but it's real draw was that it wasn't that. Fundamentally it was the story about a very disillusioned cynical boy who learned to seek the fun in life. Strike one is getting rid of the supernatural/philosophical undertones and doing a typical slice of life, the exact genre the original story was meant to be parodying. This is the equivalent of making the Scream movies just a standard slasher with no meta commentary. Unless it's a really good slasher it's just going to have none of the unique flavour / identity of the original in which it's parody nature dictates the characterization and themes of the original. Strike two is having the very first entry in this franchise be from the perspective of Nagato. This franchise has to be from Kyons perspective otherwise it just doesn't work. Unless we're not in Kyons perspective he's just an ordinary bland side character. Which is exactly what he is here. Gone is the cynism and snark that made him such an iconic character. Can't have a love interest be like that so we gotta completely scrap his characterisation to fit into this slice of life romcom. Strike 3 is a big one. And it's that reading this I realised my previous apprehensions were wrong. Actually, a spin off about the Nagato world from disappearance could work, in fact it could actually be really really interesting. Except this manga didn't do that. This is not the Nagato world from disappearance. This is simply inspired by it, the Nagato world was a basis for this series to tell its by standard romcom using the characters from Haruhi just to bank off an already established fanbase. I genuinely am so annoyed that the most obvious and interesting concept for this series was right there and it could have been amazing. So let me pitch it Let this series be the actual Nagato world from disappearance. Open the first chapter to that moment in disappearance where Kyon has to choose whether to press the enter key of not. Except this time he doesn't press it. From that moment it establishes that this is a separate continuity, a new timeline created by a what if scenario. Have Kyon be the main perspective again except this time we're in a slice of life story except Kyon still has the memories of his previous time with Haruhi and the SOS brigade. Have a story about Kyon having to let go of that old world. Since he became briefly aquainted with SOS brigade from this world let's see how his relationship with these new versions will differ. Let's see him eventually form new bonds with them as he begins to establish a new brigade. Let him learn from the Haruhi of the old world so that it's up to him now to bring everyone together, to form a new brigade, to force everyone to go out and seek their own fun. It could've been a really compelling idea with a whole new character arc for Kyon. Heck even if the spin off needs Nagato to be the protagonist that's fine. As long as Kyon retains those memories and is somewhat disillusioned and readjusting to this world then it will still be compelling. Either way the route this manga series took is unfortunately the most boring one and robs all these amazing characters of what made them so great in the first place. For the positives - Asakura is easily the most compelling character. She still retains the motherly qualities of her original counterpart with hints of a much more sinister side. In terms of taking a supernatural character and putting them through the slice of life converter this is how it should be done - Certain previous characteristics such as Nagato being a big eater or Asakuras death stare being implemented into these characters is a nice touch and makes it actually feel like some attempt to retain the characteristics of the original was made - Art style is decent. I like that they opted for a different softer art style to fit the genre. If it was the same art style of the Light novels/Anime it would have made things even more confusing and to be honest I'd like this to feel really detached from the original series😂

This is a series of ten manga volumes; the cover is of the first of the ten. The characters in this series share the names from another of the author's series, "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" which was a huge hit. The current series preserves, in a milder version, the character attributes from the earlier series, but this is fundamentally a growing-of-age rom-com. Although the series has a few good moments, it is not particularly good overall. The last volume says this is the end, but it seems more like an aside than a conclusion. Either the author never knew where he wanted to go, or he never got there. The character artwork also leaves a lot to be desired -- with the exception of Negato Yuki-chan, they are hard to tell apart. The artist also uses a popular meme to express that the characters are in some sort of emotional state -- then there is no way to know who is who. If you are not familiar with manga, please do not start here.

Takes the characters from Suzumiya Haruhi casting Nagato Yuki as a shy bookworm with a crush on Kyon. The universe also seems to suffer from the male version of the Smurfette syndrome (or onegina?) with Mikuru also being pushed towards Kyon. Ryuoko Asakura acts as Nagato's spokesman while Tsuruya is Mikuru's. Nagato is the one who helps Haruhi with her endeavours in this one. ... It just doesn't feel that interesting. It reads like a typical comedy romance, with nothing that interesting about it. Maybe it'll get better later on? Not sure if I'll read a second volume.

Read this as a quick read, and boy was it cute.
I was a big fan of the 'Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya' when I was a teenager (regrettably, learnt the 'Hare Hare Yukai 'off by heart), but never saw season two or the spin off anime, and now I think I have to.
I always liked Yuki as a character, and found her slightly more human personality in this manga rather endearing.
However, the artstyle made Asakura, Tsuruya, and, surprisingly, Mikuru look indistinguishable from each other.

This Series is rated Older Teen for Language and possibly sexual situations (at one point Yuki is partially exposed because her friend wants to clean her shirt due to a stain and they both forgot there was a guy in the room. Seriously though after going through the first book this series is mild compared to some of th fan service in manga. I can imagine at some point there might be some kind of groping or another so if that bothers you don't read this series. Picking up in a an alternate universe where Yuki is a normal girl and Haruhi Suzumiya is not an all powerful person who accidentally affects the world around her without knowing. Yuki is a cute character compared to the emotionless android girl/alien in the original series, I had no problem reading this book and being reintroduced to all the old characters as if they were simply a slice of life even though they have already experienced many things in their adventures in the original series. My favorite part of the book is how the artist has the various characters show their expressions leaving nothing to chance when figuring out what is on their minds. This is especially rue considering Yuki is much more emotional then her original. :)

I'll probably continue to read the series, because Yuki is my favorite character in the Haruhi universe. That said, I wasn't too fond of the manga style, which differs a bit much from the anime stylings/original manga in my eyes (it's a little more chibi, and not necessarily in a good way?). Also, Yuki is a little TOO human perhaps? In the main series, I was anxious for her to show a human side, and gleeful when "emotions" began showing through. Obviously, if this side story takes place during the Disappearance arc, she would be fully human, but I don't know....I think I just was overloaded by the range of emotions she suddenly showed. For example, in the anime film "Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" Yuki becomes human but the changes in her character are far more subtle and I liked them better that way. Also, Kyon's personality in this is weird. I miss the snarky attitude!

The spin-off, I think is what they called this, with the same characters from Haruhi Suzumiya but with a different plot. Romantic comedy with the stress on the romance, which made it quite disappointing. The other spin-off, Haruhi-chan was more fun and the explanation was of course the lack of Haruhi Suzumiya in this spin-off. I don't care about shy quiet girl even if she is cute, because Yuki-chan's cuteness apparently does not work on me. Which is why despite my disappointment I probably am going to read the next installment because Haruhi is finally making her appearance. Weirdly enough, I am not a fan of Haruhi Suzumiya the anime. I guess I am in the mood for manga and this happened to be conveniently lying around in the library.

I am so sad to have not liked this book. I don't particularly like either of the characters in this story, even though I think I should have. Also, the way the pictures are in this story, it is very difficult to identify which character is which, especially when there are sound effects blocking their faces. This book should have been a cute read but I just could not like any of the characters enough to develop an attachment to the story. I think if I were younger I would have enjoyed this much more. I recommend to teens, but maybe not young adults unless you still love mangas.

It has been quite a while since I read these, and reading them after just recently finishing the original manga was a good choice. The character designs are out of this world, and probably my favourite of any manga, and the art style is phenomenal. The story leaves behind mystery and paranormal for a more slice of life/romance focus, which is really nice.

February 22, 2023The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzuyima is a poignant sci-fi coming-of-age epic that explores the anthropic principle and defamiliarizes the fragility of friendship. The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan is about a shy girl who learns not to be so shy.

I would recommend this book to my class mates if they are interested in a more of a shy romantic type of story, the characters are designed beautifully, personalities are great just all around a really good book.
