Coronation Street fans were left pleading for Dee-Dee Bailey to be okay after she went into labour and gave birth to a baby girl after having her health concern dismissed.

As fans of the ITV soap are aware, Dee-Dee fell pregnant with her late ex-fiance Joel Deering's baby last year. She found out she was expecting the groomer's third child just before he was killed by Lauren Bolton, who was groomed by Joel and also had his baby, son Frankie.

Dee-Dee battled with whether to keep her unborn child but when Lauren's baby, Frankie, became ill, it was clear that Dee-Dee's baby could be his only chance for survival.

Her family were pleased to discover she was pregnant as they imagined welcoming another baby into the family. But Dee-Dee confirmed that she was just continuing with the pregnancy to help baby Frankie and that she'd be putting her own child up for adoption.

Her brother, James, has since returned to Weatherfield, having been spoken to by their dad, as offered to adopt his niece with his partner, Danny. Dee-Dee has been unsure about the idea but has left handing her brother her baby girl after her dramatic arrival during Monday night's (March 31) episode.

While Dee-Dee was visiting Lauren and her poorly baby son Frankie in hospital, a pregnant Dee-Dee was clearly in pain and told Lauren it was down to Braxton Hicks. But as Frankie's bone marrow transplant got underway, a concerned Lauren urged Dee-Dee to get checked in the maternity unit.

While she was seen by a nurse, Dee-Dee's pain wasn't taken seriously due to the staff in the ward being overworked. But her high blood pressure was noted and it was later revealed, as she was rushed back to the hospital after her waters broke, that she had pre-eclampsia and the baby needed to arrive immediately.

But before a doctor arrived and confirmed the diagnosis, Dee-Dee was left in agony without a bed in the maternity unit, with a midwife making a patronising, micro-aggressive comment that "women like you are built for this".

After the birth Dee-Dee still complained that she didn't feel very unwell and her concerns were once again dismissed. The same staff member accused her of being aggressive when Dee-Dee snapped that, contrary to instructions, she would not be having skin-to-skin contact with her baby girl or be breastfeeding.

But the family's joy at James adopting the newborn was soon turned to panic as when Dee-Dee's extrene tiredness was dismissed, she fell unconscious and it was discovered that she was bleeding heavily, something she was heard hinting at as she told the nurse she felt wet "down there".

Following the scenes, Corrie fans rushed to social media as they pleaded for Dee-Dee to be okay and they also admitted their disgust at the situation the character found herself in as the soap tackles racial injustice in maternity care.

@TVMusings22 added: "I admire #corrie tenacity at not shying away from these scenes with DeeDee and how the NHS let black women down daily especially during pregnancy and labour. It is actually horrific watching it play out in real time but I'm glad they're highlighting it. It's a major problem."
